The Globe's Dividend All-Stars 2025
03/02/25   Stingy Investing
"Dividend stocks are loved by Canadians because they have a pleasant habit of paying tax-advantaged income that tends to grow over time with the possibility of capital gains along the way. But the Canadian stock market is stuffed full of dividend stocks and it can be hard to find the best it has to offer. That's why we're pleased to present the Globe's Dividend All-Stars for 2025. It provides a wealth of data and analysis on the largest 200 dividend-paying stocks on the Toronto Stock Exchange and includes a star rating for each one. The top 20 stocks get a full five out of five stars and make it into the team of Dividend All-Stars. We're happy to say that last year's team outperformed with gains of 29.4 per cent, including reinvested dividends."

Graphing Dividends 2023
02/08/23   Stingy Investing
Here's an update to my Graphing Dividends feature that corrects calculation errors that impacted the 2022 returns. My apologies for missing the bug the first time around. [pdf]

Be wary of extreme yields
01/29/23   Stingy Investing
"Overall, returns tend to fall dramatically when yields reach extremely high levels."

The easy way to returns
01/17/23   Stingy Investing
"Slashing fees is an easy, and practical, way to boost long-term returns and it explains the popularity of low-fee funds and very low-fee index funds in particular."

The smaller stable dividend portfolio
01/17/23   Stingy Investing
"I used a combined injection of low-volatility and dividends on large stocks to form the Stable Dividend portfolio. This time around I'm using a similar approach to inoculate smaller stocks to form the, imaginatively named, Smaller Stable Dividend portfolio."

The Globe 250 Method
12/18/22   Stingy Investing
"Our star system combines two schools of investing with pedigrees that stretch back decades and that have been quite profitable in recent times. It starts with value investing principles, which favour profitable companies that trade at low prices relative to their fundamentals. Our system also employs techniques used by momentum investors, who like to buy recent winners."

The Globe 250 Megastars
12/18/22   Stingy Investing
"Our new Megastar ranking of Canada's largest publicly-traded companies evaluates each major stock on the TSX and awards two star ratings - one for its appeal to value investors and the other for its allure to momentum investors. We then focused on the 20 stocks with the best blend of value and momentum characteristics, which form our Megastar team."

The Champagne portfolio
12/16/22   Stingy Investing
"The possibility of new highs prompted me to take a second look at the Champagne portfolio. It invests in the Canadian stock market after it hits new all-time highs and hides out in Canadian bonds the rest of the time. I was particularly interested to see how it fared during this year's unusually bad market for bonds."

The Globe 250
12/09/22   Stingy Investing
"The idea is to deliver the information that investors desire and use numerical analysis to highlight stocks that might deserve a spot in your portfolio." [$]

The Screaming Value portfolio
11/28/22   Stingy Investing
"But the second graph puts the screaming into the Screaming Value portfolio because it shows how far it fell in down periods."

The Blended Momentum portfolio
11/14/22   Stingy Investing
"Momentum shines when it comes to returns. It has outperformed over the very long term in nearly all major markets, across many asset classes and using a variety of different approaches."

The Dividend Monster portfolio
10/31/22   Stingy Investing
"I was working in the lab late one night, when I brewed up the frightfully profitable Dividend Monster portfolio, which mixes momentum with dividend investing."

The Frugal Dividend portfolio
10/23/22   Stingy Investing
"The Frugal Dividend portfolio offers a crop of stable dividend payers trading at bargain prices. It's the value investing variant of the Stable Dividend portfolio"

The Stable Dividend portfolio
10/11/22   Stingy Investing
"The recent tumble inspired me to check in on the Stable Dividend strategy to see how it's holding up in these uncertain times. It offers a conservative approach to picking stocks that focuses on Canadian dividend payers that are steady performers."

Spreads and recessions
09/25/22   Stingy Investing
"While the linkage between negative spreads and recessions appears to be strong in the U.S., it has been weaker in our home and native land."

TSX 60 for value investors
09/25/22   Stingy Investing
"The low-P/E portfolio fared the best of the bunch with average annual gains of 10.8 per cent from the end of January, 2002, through to the end of last month. It handily beat the index by an average of about three percentage points a year."

Hot potato update
09/18/22   Stingy Investing
"The hot potato portfolio has served up average annual returns of 15.2 per cent since 1981 by using momentum to jump into stocks during bull runs and out of them during long bear markets." [$]

Looking at 10-year returns
08/14/22   Stingy Investing
"U.S. politicians should be singing Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees as the weight of 1970s-style inflation threatens to send them to the unemployment line."

Watching for a bottom
08/07/22   Stingy Investing
"The economy is starting to fall. Its descent is promising to be like that of the space capsule in the movie Apollo 13. As it plunges, everyone is waiting with bated breath, hoping to see the parachutes deploy before it crashes."

Another bear. Oh, bother!
07/17/22   Stingy Investing
"Oh, bother! We've fallen into a mess of a bear market. But Pooh Bear is really concerned about the price of honey because his last visit to the supermarket was distressing."

Where things stand in Canadian dividend land
02/28/21   Stingy Investing
"The long-term results dramatically favour the high-yield portfolio, which climbed by an average of 13.5 per cent from the start of 1977 through to the end of 2020. The market portfolio gained an average of 10.1 per cent annually over the same period while the low-yield portfolio fared nearly as well with a 9.8-per-cent annual gain." [$]

Chou follows Buffett and Watsa
02/08/21   Stingy Investing
"I wish Mr. Chou well on his new venture and hope it proves to be a great success, much like Fairfax Financial or Berkshire Hathaway. But I admit that I'm not a disinterested observer. I own a stake in all three value-oriented companies. With a little luck they'll float higher over the long term." [$]

Book value bargains in the TSX
01/30/21   Stingy Investing
"A portfolio of large stocks with the lowest 30 per cent of P/Bs gained an average of 12.9 per cent annually from the end of June, 1926, to the end of November, 2020. By way of comparison, the U.S. market gained an average of 10 per cent annually over the same period. Unfortunately, the low-P/B value portfolio disappointed in recent years. It gained just 9.4 per cent annually over the 10 years through to the end of November, 2020, while the market advanced by 14.6 per cent annually."

The value recovery
01/10/21   Stingy Investing
"The economic turmoil of the past year caused many companies to pause their share repurchase programs to conserve cash. But those with the ability, and guts, to continue buying their shares in hard times deserve a second look from investors because such firms have generally fared well over the long term." [$]

2020's lessons on risk tolerance
01/03/21   Stingy Investing
"The problem is, it's easy for investors to overestimate their tolerance for risk in good times, only to wish they'd been more conservative when losses loom large during a market crash. Similarly, after the markets rebound, they might wish they had been more aggressive in bad times." [$]

Selling in January
12/19/20   Stingy Investing
"This year's winners now face a dilemma. The lucky Scrooges with piles of capital gains fuelled by the manic market might want to lighten up on their high flyers before the eggnog runs out. But taxes can make the timing tricky. They can sell now and pay taxes this year, or wait and defer their taxes into the new year." [$]

Reversal stocks
12/05/20   Stingy Investing
"Pickings are slim in the bargain bin after the recent runup. Only 24 stocks in the S&P/TSX Composite Index suffered from declines of more than 25 per cent since the start of 2020 through to Nov. 30, while the other 198 stocks fared better with 122 of them gaining ground." [$]

Don't count out value
11/15/20   Stingy Investing
"The announcement buoyed the market and value stocks in particular. I've been investing for almost three decades and don't remember a time when several of my stocks gained more than 20 per cent in a single day. But it happened on Nov. 9, when advances north of 5 per cent seemed to be the norm for value stocks." [$]

There and back again
11/08/20   Stingy Investing
"COVID crashed into the market this spring and appears to be returning for a second round. It's only natural for investors to worry that the market may plumb its March lows again. While some concern is warranted, I'm going to flip the pessimistic view on its head and seek stocks that fell hard in the spring but came back again." [$]

Fizzy giants
10/24/20   Stingy Investing
"Problem is, giant companies have a hard time growing significantly. Compounding matters, growth that is slow, or slowing, can be a real issue when stocks trade at high multiples." [$]

Look to the long term
10/11/20   Stingy Investing
"If you bought the index at the end of a randomly selected month in the study period, there's a 62-per-cent chance it climbed the following month. Conversely, you'd have lost money the other 38 per cent of the time. The odds of a happy result increased over longer periods. If you checked in on the index every year, there was a 73-per-cent chance it was up over the prior year's result. If you checked every two years, the chance of success climbed to 83 per cent. The chance of success shot up to 98 per cent by the five-year mark." [$]

A sleepy approach to dividend investing
09/26/20   Stingy Investing
"Many speculators trade frequently, but investors should focus on the long term rather than on the short term. Smart investors like to buy and hold for very long periods while their firms grow and pay dividends." [$]

Dividend investing success
09/11/20   Stingy Investing
"The U.S. market generated annual gains of 11.4 per cent versus 10.2 per cent gains in Canada. It was a good period for stocks. Similarly, the high-yield portfolios outpaced the markets in both countries. The Canadian high-yield portfolio fared particularly well with gains of 14.1 per cent versus 12.4 per cent in the United States." [$]

Falling dividend yields
08/30/20   Stingy Investing
"Yields have fallen for every group shown in the graph. Half of dividend stocks yield more than 2.9 per cent based on data from Aug. 20 and that's down from the 6-per-cent yields seen at the March lows and the 3.4-per-cent yields from the start of the year. Income seekers are suffering. Bond yields are at shockingly low levels with 10-year Canadian government yields near 0.6 per cent, according to the Bank of Canada. While most dividend stocks offer slightly higher yields, they come with big risks of the sort that were amply demonstrated just a few months ago." [$]

A nearly two century winning streak
08/22/20   Stingy Investing
"Value investing added more than 100 years to its winning streak after the recent unearthing of data from before the great crash of 1929. All told, value outperformed in the United States since 1825 with many ups and downs along the way. Alas, it is currently in its most dramatic down period on record."

Moving average momentum
08/01/20   Stingy Investing
"The moving-average portfolio gained an average of 10.4 per cent annually from the end of 1994 through to the end of June, 2020. It beat a buy-and-hold investment in the stock index, which climbed 7.8 per cent annually over the same period. The bond index fared reasonably well but lagged both with annual returns of 6.3 per cent." [$]

Value stocks are cheap
07/18/20   Stingy Investing
"There is a growing chasm between the haves and the have-nots of the stock market. The haves are represented by glamorous growth stocks such as the high-tech darlings powering the internet. Value stocks are the have-nots and include most everything else." [$]

On the risks of concentration
07/04/20   Stingy Investing
"Investors inspired by Mr. Munger's success should think thrice before buying just a few stocks. Such portfolios tend to either do very well or very poorly, but the odds favour the poor side of the ledger. While performing poorly is unfortunate for billionaires, it can be devastating for those of us of more modest means." [$]

Standing on the shoulders of giants
06/19/20   Stingy Investing
"He then launched his firm, Tidefall Capital Management, on Jan. 21, not long before the economy ran into the COVID crisis. The subsequent market decline came as bad news to most investors, but Tidefall's hedge fund climbed by a whopping 28.5 per cent from inception through to the end of May." [$]

The bull market is back
06/06/20   Stingy Investing
"The extra effort paid off in the form of sizzling returns because the hot potato portfolio fried up average annual returns of 15.4 per cent from the end of 1980 to the end of May, 2020. It surpassed the passive potato portfolio by an average of 5.8 percentage points a year." [$]

Grim times for dividend investors
05/22/20   Stingy Investing
"Investors are worried about their dividend stocks. Canadian dividend payers lagged the market in the recent downturn and companies are starting to trim their dividends. But low share prices offer the prospect of reasonable returns to long-term dividend investors." [$]

When the TSX escapes the bear
05/09/20   Stingy Investing
"There were nine occasions when it hit new historic highs as it emerged from bear markets. The index climbed by an average of 11.1 per cent, 23.2 per cent and 34 per cent in the 12-, 24- and 36-months after the new highs." [$]

Investing in bad times
04/24/20   Stingy Investing
"Looking back at the prior 25 years, it is clear that investors benefited from buying stocks in down periods. More than that, they didn't have to time their purchases to perfection to do quite well. Simply buying when others were fearful yielded good results for investors who had the fortitude to hold on through the storms that buffeted them." [$]

Look to Balanced Bob
04/11/20   Stingy Investing
"Bob's experience should provide investors some solace in these hard times. A simple low-fee balanced portfolio survived despite being launched at the top of the 2000 bubble and suffering from three bear markets. While the current downturn is likely in its early stages, it would have to be truly epic in its size and duration to extinguish Bob's portfolio over the next decade." [$]

Buying a bear market
03/27/20   Stingy Investing
"Perhaps most encouragingly, investors who bought at the start of bear markets generally fared well - provided they held on. On average, the market gained 13.3 per cent in the 12 months after moving into bear-market territory and 34.3 per cent over the 24 months from the bear's beginning. Subsequent bull markets usually added a great deal to these gains." [$]

Momentum down
03/06/20   Stingy Investing
"Signs of a serious decline can be gleaned from the behaviour of momentum stocks, which often act like canaries in the market's coal mine." [$]

A more generous strategy
02/28/20   Stingy Investing
"Prof. Gagnon prefers his own 'variable percentage withdrawal' method instead. The basic idea is to figure out how much to take out of a portfolio over a set number of years, assuming long-term historical growth rates for a particular asset mix. The amount taken out each year varies both as the value of the portfolio changes and as the retiree gets older."

An inevitable market downturn
01/17/20   Stingy Investing
"There were 138 separate downturns in the S&P 500's inflation-adjusted record, based on Prof. Shiller's data. About 36 per cent of them lasted for one month and 67 per cent of them lasted for three months or less before the market moved up to new highs." [$]

The power of reinvesting dividends
01/03/20   Stingy Investing
"The relative gains highlight the potential benefits of dividend reinvestment. The boost is so compelling that most investors like to use total returns rather than capital gains when studying the market." [$]

The flip side of tax-loss selling
12/11/19   Stingy Investing
"While it makes sense to sell losers before the end of the year, the rush to do so tends to put further pressure on the shares of firms that have already declined a great deal. Selling for tax rather than fundamental reasons piques the interest of bargain hunters who often view the last few weeks of the year as the stock market.s equivalent of a Boxing Day sale." [$]

Dividend investing under the microscope
12/11/19   Stingy Investing
"Today I'm going to put Canadian dividend stocks under the microscope to see how they measured up in past bullish and bearish periods." [$]

"I've written many articles highlighting the big returns generated by Canadian dividend stocks. They usually include only one or two graphs due to space limitations. But I've given the extra graphs a home here for the enjoyment of dividend aficionados." [pdf]

The Champagne portfolio
11/16/19   Stingy Investing
"Investors pop open the Champagne when stocks hit new highs. But after quaffing down a boatload of bubbly in recent months, the newly rich might wonder how long the good times will last and whether now is a good time to put new money to work. I created the Champagne portfolio to explore the situation. It invests in the Canadian stock market when it hits a new all-time high, but hides out in Canadian bonds the rest of the time. The result was stock-like performance with a bond-like downside profile." [$]

How to invest a cash windfall
11/01/19   Stingy Investing
"The odds heavily favoured Canadians who immediately invested the whole cash windfall. They beat the DCA approach in roughly 69 per cent of the periods and outperformed by 2.2 percentage points a year on average." [$]

Dividend Monsters
10/18/19   Stingy Investing
"The Dividend Monster portfolio looks through the high-yield portfolio and invests an equal amount of money in the 10 stocks with the highest returns over the prior year. It gained an average of 17.7 per cent annually over the 20 years through to the end of September, according to Bloomberg's back-testing facility. That's a monstrously good result." [$]

The Acquirers Fund
10/04/19   Stingy Investing
"The value strategy used by the Acquirers Fund is heavily informed by the methods highlighted in Mr. Carlisle's books. More specifically, he likes to look for bargain stocks by comparing a firm's enterprise value - in simple terms, the market value of its equity plus net debt - with its operating income after depreciation. The ratio is a close cousin of the enterprise-value to earnings-before-interest-and-taxes ratio. You can think of both as fancier versions of the more familiar price-to-earnings ratio." [$]

The hot potato portfolio
09/24/19   Stingy Investing
"While the humble spud fills bellies, it also lends its name to two portfolios in the investing world. The passive couch potato portfolio is standard fare for index investors and sports a solid record. More adventurous souls nibble on the hot potato portfolio and its scorching returns." [$]

Personalized Returns
09/09/19   Stingy Investing
"When it comes to money-weighted returns both the sequence of returns and the flow of money into, and out of, the portfolio matter. It's a big reason why it's important to be careful when comparing money-weighted returns to time-weighted returns. (Generally speaking, when evaluating funds, or indexes, one should compare their time-weighted returns.)"

The gap
09/06/19   Stingy Investing
"The simple choice to save before retirement or to spend in retirement can make a big difference on the return gap calculations even for very disciplined investors." [$]

The perch portfolio
08/31/19   Stingy Investing
"When it comes to lunch, many investors pay for their lakeside repast using money sent their way in the form of dividends from large companies. But smaller companies also pay dividends and often generate succulent returns." [$]

Sludgy advice
08/12/19   Stingy Investing
"Investors should be mindful that the application of behavioural technology can be used for both good and ill. Conscientious advisers will use it to help their clients, while others will use it on their clients to their detriment." [$]

The Frugal Dividend portfolio
06/26/19   Stingy Investing
"Mixing a gin and tonic yields a satisfying summer drink. Combining investment ingredients can provide sunny returns. In that spirit, I'd like to introduce the Frugal Dividend portfolio. It adds a value investing twist to the Stable Dividend portfolio. The idea is to seek out low-volatility dividend stocks that trade at reasonable prices because the combination has worked well over the past 25 years." [$]

Dividends plus low vol
05/20/19   Stingy Investing
"the Stable Dividend portfolio, goes a step further. It starts with the dividend payers from the 300 stock portfolio and buys an equal amount of the 20 stocks with the lowest volatility (over the prior 260 days) each year. It fared even better with an average annual return of 13.7 per cent over the 25 year period." [$]

Two returning megastar stocks
04/27/19   Stingy Investing
"I invite fellow investors to dig into Report on Business magazine's Top 1000 guide to Canadian companies (distributed to Globe and Mail subscribers this past Friday and found online at tgam.ca/top1000). It contains detailed data on the largest 1,000 firms in the land and comes with a star system that ranks stocks based on their attractiveness as potential value and momentum investments. Firms with the best characteristics make it into the 20-stock team of Megastars." [$]

Top 1000 stock picks
04/27/19   Stingy Investing
"The Megastar system has what it takes to succeed over the long term because it combines two proven schools of investing: value and momentum." [$]

A bin of bargains
04/21/19   Stingy Investing
"The Canadian stock market is up 20 per cent from its Christmas Eve low. Despite the gain, it appears to be reasonably valued. Looking at the exchange sector by sector reveals a bin of bargains." [$]

Fees and taxes can ruin your retirement
03/25/19   Stingy Investing
"The stock market produced big gains in the past and investors dream about retiring on similar returns in the future. But their plans might be ruined because the market's gains do not include some major costs." [$]
